Friday June 15th was the first Roving Art reception of the year hosted by the Downtown Medicine Hat Artwalk venues. Each of the locations were open between 7:00-10:00 with refreshments and music and a fun atmospher all around.
The Hive featured an exhibition of our in-house artists, which was accompanied by the musical talents of Mike Wilson.
The CCDA’s annual Easter Egg Hunt was this morning and the Hive was Hoppin’ with activity! We had 100s of little folks stop in to gather eggs and have their face painted by residence artist Stephanie Dalla-Longa.
Wow, that was…amazing!
The opening night for our Curiosities exhibition was one of the most successful shows we’ve ever had, and we have the artists involvd to thank for that! The only way it could have been a better night was if all of the artists who participated were able to join us in the celebration of our first exhibition opening as a society.
Medicine Hat College’s Visual Communiations students were here with thier Pop-Up Swap Shop, which was a big hit and certainly added another element of interest. It was exciting to overhear comments from visitors throughout the night too! “This place is really cool”, “There’s some really cool stuff here”, “This is impressive for Medicine Hat”, and on and on and on.
The traveling musicians (D&D Foodmart) were the icing on the cake, lending a really festive and cultural atmosphere to it all!
If you weren’t able to make it last night the exhibition will be up until April 30th. Be sure to stop in and have a look at the amazing pieces from over 60 artists in Western Canada.
A call went out last month for artists to submit small scale work under the theme of curiosities. There was an overwhelming response with more than 30 artists submitting works of all types. The exhibition will open later this week and will remain on display until the end of April. Join us on Friday for the opening reception!

Exciting things are happening at The Hive!
A group of past and present hive artists are poised to launch the new era of The Hive Artists’ Hub. Over the past month we have weighed our options for the future and have begun the process of formalizing as a Society. We plan to have this transition completed for January so we don’t see any lag time in operation.
Our current programming as an incubator site for artists to develop their micro businesses will change into more of a traditional studio rental space with attached boutique gallery. We will still help foster the business development aspect but it will be less formalized and done more on the initiative of the artists themselves. It has been a really great experience to this point and we are all looking forward to what the future holds for the Hive!
We will have 11 studios for rent ranging in size from roughly 60 square feet to nearly 240 square feet, with the average space being around 100 square feet, the majority of which will be open to a common area and open to public visitation during regular business hours. This is one of the features that makes The Hive a unique experience. The open studios not only allow the public access to the artists at work, but allow a great level of collaborative thought amongst the artists and foster a real sense of community. We will also be offering a few private, locked studios as well.
We are still working out the details on how much the studio rents, and what the application process for them will be, but we aim to make the Hive a safe and affordable place for all artists to create, display and promote their work.
