SUMMER CLASSES CANCELLED

Your Support is Appreciated

As a young society, we at The Hive Artists’ Hub appreciate your support.
Our art program is also young, and evolving. Our studio artists often offer classes and workshops. We would love for you to join us. Please consider The Hive for art classes for all ages througout the year.

This summer our registration was too low, but another round of class will be offered again in the fall, which is one of our best seasons!

Consider some alternatives for the summer, including Inspire Gallery, Esplanade Arts & Heritage Center, and Redcliff Community Services.

We believe in the value of visual art education.

POSTPONED – Drawn to Paper – An Exploratory Drawing Workshop

POSTPONED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE

Drawn to Paper – An Exploratory Drawing Workshop

Instructor: Kelsie Risling

March 30 – Still Life

This session will address the object and its association to still life. An interchangeable still life will be erected in the gallery space and students will first examine and depict it through a series of short gesture drawings. A final study of the still life will be completed within the last forty-five minutes.

April 6 – Life Drawing

This session introduces the representation of the human figure through observational drawing. It employs the human figure as a basis for the study of gesture, line, plane, and volume. This study serves as a reference for a broad range of approaches in various media. The class begins with gesture drawings that depict the live model’s changing positions and concludes with a final forty-five minute figure study.

During the first two sessions students will examine:

1. Methods of observations and measurement

2. Gesture and pose as visual dynamic

3. Figure/ground relationships

4. Contour and modeling with various media, techniques and light conditions

April 13 – Collage and Expand

This session explores narrative and content through collage. Students are given the previous week to complete an 8”X11” collage using whatever subject matter and materials they desire. Using the collage as reference they will draw and expand it onto a large sheet of paper. This change in scale will challenge their ability to analyze and perceive a smaller image and force them to consider principal components of space, line, shape, texture color, etc. This session will emphasize the development of the students’ personal ideas and concepts relating to their work.

April 20 – Intuitive Drawing

During this final and perhaps most challenging session students will discover the role of drawing in originating and clarifying intuitive ideas. Through small scale, thirty- second and one- minute drawings students explore simple mark making and abstraction using a variety of materials. Their goal is to let their minds wander and try to relinquish control over to their drawing tools and body. After exercising these skills students will choose one of the smaller studies and expand it onto a large sheet of paper while trying to maintain original composition, line quality, color etc. Students will then be invited to join in critical conversation about one another’s works.

All 4 sessions for $80 or individually for $25 each.
