“Arborglyphs is an attempt to capture the forms of trees both in and out, retold within its very substance. No two trees are exactly the same, each shaped by a myriad of forces at work each day. My work on these already amazing examples of art, seeks to be just as unique as the pieces that I work upon.” ~Hayden Werezak

Currently, I am aesthetically and conceptually interested in found, retro photographs of my mother and use them as a vehicle to examine my erratic emotions. I relate intensely to photos of her where she evokes a lonely, confused and somewhat unaware expression and aura. I use chunks of compressed charcoal to representationally isolate her bust onto large pieces of heavy paper. When complete, I immediately and repeatedly erase the fresh drawing and leave a residual, ghostly image that walks a thin rope between being beautiful, ugly, delicate, strong and sinister.

UNDER THE INFLUENCE – Susan Knight Solo Exhibition
December 10th, 2010 – January 15th, 2011
Opening reception: December 10th, 2010 at 7:00pm
Susan Knight is a self-taught photographer and digital artist. She lives and works in Medicine Hat, AB where she specializes in interpretive self-portraiture. In addition to her natural creative flair, Susan has found that her formal training as an interior designer and architectural experience enhances her ability to expressherself though her art and allows her to bring a unique eye to commissioned works.
Susan’s current primary project, “In the Style of…”, is a study of the construction of personal and artistic identity through style. Using the media of costume, make-up, backdrop, and her own form, each image is thoroughly researched, meticulously plotted and digitally enhanced to create a work that is completely new yet also true to the style of selected greats from the history of portrait artistry. Through these images, the viewer can see a familiar face transform under the artist’s touch and how the artist’s craft claims and forms the subject yet works to reveal the true, constant character lurking beneath the surface.
Snippets Alana Holst solo exhibition
from October 22 to November 12 2010
Opening reception on October 22 at 7 pm
Alana Holst will be having a solo exhibition of her paintings called ‘Snippets’ from October 22 to November 12. The opening reception is Friday, October 22 at 7:00pm and everyone is welcome to enjoy and purchase Alana’s work and the music of Benjamin Thatcher. Alana’s focus is on earth’s reclamation of abandoned prairie structures and the prairie landscape. “Alana has a unique view of the prairie landscape and her paintings are always boldly textured. Many of these new paintings are cropped images of old barns that become almost abstract and quite often they have actual elements of hardware or chicken wire included in the piece for dramatic sculptural effect,” says Maureen Newton, owner of Inspire Studio and Gallery. I AM, WE ARE group exhibition
from September 17 to October 15 2010
The current vibe in downtown Medicine Hat is exciting. A new and fresh group exhibition titled I Am, We Are opening at The Hive Artists’ Hub is certainly responsible for a part of this excitement. Six interdisciplinary, local artists of varying ages and backgrounds are collectively decoding traditional ‘self portraiture.’ Acting as a display of our recent activities, the exhibition boasts works that are diverse and personal to each artist…
