Exciting things are happening at The Hive!

A group of past and present hive artists are poised to launch the new era of The Hive Artists’ Hub. Over the past month we have weighed our options for the future and have begun the process of formalizing as a Society. We plan to have this transition completed for January so we don’t see any lag time in operation.

Our current programming as an incubator site for artists to develop their micro businesses will change into more of a traditional studio rental space with attached boutique gallery. We will still help foster the business development aspect but it will be less formalized and done more on the initiative of the artists themselves. It has been a really great experience to this point and we are all looking forward to what the future holds for the Hive!

We will have 11 studios for rent ranging in size from roughly 60 square feet to nearly 240 square feet, with the average space being around 100 square feet, the majority of which will be open to a common area and open to public visitation during regular business hours. This is one of the features that makes The Hive a unique experience. The open studios not only allow the public access to the artists at work, but allow a great level of collaborative thought amongst the artists and foster a real sense of community. We will also be offering a few private, locked studios as well.

We are still working out the details on how much the studio rents, and what the application process for them will be, but we aim to make the Hive a safe and affordable place for all artists to create, display and promote their work.

poo-ki: Susan Waters solo show

Monday night Positive Culture facilitated an info gather session to help determine the direction the Hive will take in its move forward from Artist Incubation site to independent Artists Co-operative. Interested parties from all different backgrounds got together to brainstorm ideas for the future of the hive. After pinning down the key areas to focus on, a group of artists have stepped forward to help develop the plan for the coming year and into the future.

Exciting things are on the horizon!

The Hive needs your help to continue!
The Hive will become a self sustaining co-op on January 1, 2012.

In order for a co-op to succeed it takes the involvement of many committed individuals. We want you. Or more importantly we want your ideas. As a part of Medicine Hat’s cultural community, you are encouraged to attend this meeting and provide input into the following questions:
  1. How do we sustain an active visual arts culture in downtown Medicine Hat?
  2. How to sustainably fund the Hive over a five year term.
  3. How to expand artists micro businesses in downtown Medicine Hat.
    4. How can the Hive become more relevant to the community?
We are having a facilitated meeting that will be open to the public on Monday, October 17, 2011 from 6:00-9:00pm at The Hive

Please join us for refreshments and an engaging evening of creative conversation

“Arborglyphs is an attempt to capture the forms of trees both in and out, retold within its very substance.  No two trees are exactly the same, each shaped by a myriad of forces at work each day.  My work on these already amazing examples of art, seeks to be just as unique as the pieces that I work upon.” ~Hayden Werezak

FACE IT – MHC Visual Communications Painting 1

January 18th, 2011 – February 17th, 2011

Face it is an exhibition of sketched self-portraits by 13 first year painting students from the Visual Communications program at Medicine Hat College. The assignment was used to emphasize and explore the painted mark and planar shape through the generalization of value and colour into basic forms. By working quickly from direct observation, approximately 30 to 60 minutes for each sketched portrait, the idea was to capture the essence and expressive potential of the subject while avoiding getting caught up in descriptive details. In addition, it was designed to help develope observation skills by way of quickly”seeing” relative value, colour, and planar shapes, then quickly interpreting the observed.
