This children’s guide to Medicine Hat is a collection of thoughts about our City expressed through the art and words of children ranging in age from three to six years old.
The intention behind this book is to explore the identity of the City from the fresh and lively perspective of our city’s precious future citizens and leaders. Their observations are supported by additional writing, photographs and suggestions for further ways to experience the City from adults, as well as a directory of community services for children and families.
Inspired by the Italian book “Reggio Tutta: A guide to the city by the children,” this guide was four years in the making by a core group of volunteers, supported by numerous local organizations. We received crucial and much-appreciated funding from Medicine Hat Family and Community Support Services (through the generous sponsorship of the Society of Grasslands Naturalists), the Community View Lions Club and the City of Medicine Hat.
This book is unique in Alberta, and may indeed be unique in Canada, in compiling and presenting children’s expressions and feelings about the city in which they live. The Guide’s sense of community and belonging includes not only the hundreds of children who have participated in creating the book, but extends outward into the future, to the children and families who will use the Guide to understand, explore and connect with all aspects of community in Medicine Hat.
These collected works paint a vibrant and refreshing portrait of Medicine Hat. It is a loving portrait, captured in the art and minds of children, shared for all to interact with and cherish. – The Children’s Guide Interest Group
The Hive Artists’ Hub is proud to host the Children’s Guide to the City internet presence and to be its distributor to the many venues who have the Guide in their collection and/or for purchase.
